The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit by age 1, or within 6 months of the first tooth. The first visit is not a scary cleaning — it is about establishing a dental home, detecting early concerns, and building positive associations that make dental care comfortable for life.
Three reasons the first year matters: early cavity detection (baby bottle tooth decay can affect infants as young as 12 months, a risk raised by juice, formula, or sweetened drinks in bottles, especially at bedtime); development monitoring (jaw growth, tooth eruption, lip or tongue tie, and bite are easier to address early); and positive associations (children whose first visits are gentle are far less likely to develop dental anxiety than those who first see a dentist in pain).
The first visit is relaxed and unhurried, starting with a conversation and never pushing past what your child is ready for.
We talk through feeding, teething, home care, pacifier and bottle use, and any concerns — the most important part.
For infants, the dentist sits knee-to-knee with you and baby lies across both laps, close and within your sight.
Even with a few teeth, the dentist checks for early decay, gum health, eruption, jaw development, frenum attachment, and bite.
For toddlers with several teeth, a gentle cleaning and fluoride varnish.
Brushing technique, teething and diet guidance, and the next visit in 6 months.
