A frenectomy is a quick, minimally invasive procedure that releases a restrictive frenum — the tissue connecting the lip to the gum (lip tie) or the tongue to the floor of the mouth (tongue tie). When too tight, a frenum can interfere with breastfeeding in infants, speech development in children, and orthodontic outcomes in teens and adults.
A tight labial frenum (lip tie) can cause a gap between the front teeth, gum recession, breastfeeding difficulty, and orthodontic interference. A restrictive lingual frenum (tongue tie, or ankyloglossia) can affect breastfeeding in infants, speech in children, and oral hygiene in adults.
The procedure itself is brief, with stretching exercises afterward to keep the release open.
The frenum attachment and range of motion are assessed; infant cases are coordinated with the parents' feeding report.
Topical plus local anesthetic for older children and adults; topical alone is typically enough for infants.
The restrictive tissue is precisely released in a minimally invasive procedure.
Prescribed to prevent reattachment, especially for tongue tie releases.
