A dental implant requires adequate bone volume to integrate successfully, but teeth lost to decay, gum disease, or trauma often leave behind diminished jawbone — and once a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone begins resorbing within weeks, narrowing the ridge over months and years. Bone grafting rebuilds that bone so an implant becomes possible.
Common graft types include socket (ridge) preservation, placed at the time of extraction to prevent resorption — the most proactive approach for patients planning future implants; ridge augmentation, which rebuilds volume where significant resorption has already occurred; sinus lift (sinus augmentation), which adds bone in the upper jaw where the sinus floor limits height for upper molars and premolars; and block grafts for areas of significant deficiency. Most grafts use allograft (processed donor bone) or xenograft (processed bovine bone) — both biocompatible, FDA-regulated, and from certified sources, eliminating the need for a second surgical site.
Grafting builds the bone first, then the implant follows once the site is ready.
X-rays or a CBCT scan assess your bone volume and any deficiency.
Graft material is placed at the deficient site, with a resorbable membrane if guided regeneration is needed.
The graft integrates with your native bone over about 3–6 months.
Imaging confirms adequate volume for an implant.
