How Deep Cleaning Differs from a Regular Cleaning
Scaling and root planing (SRP) — often called a dental deep cleaning — is the primary non-surgical treatment for gum disease. A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) cleans at and slightly above the gumline and is appropriate for healthy gums or gingivitis. SRP cleans below the gumline, into the periodontal pockets where a routine cleaning cannot reach.
Scaling removes bacterial deposits, calculus, and biofilm from the root surfaces below the gumline, into pockets of 4–7mm or deeper. Root planing then smooths the root surfaces to eliminate rough areas that harbor bacteria, which helps the gum tissue reattach. It is performed under local anesthesia, usually one or two quadrants per session.
